Floor Sticky After Staining

We put minwax floor stain on the floor last night at 6 p m and today at 1 p m.

There is wax between the boards which won t come out and the solvents in the finish soften it and reacts with the finish. Steam mops are a great solution for cleaning sticky floors. Don t rush the process. Soak it and put it in a none flammable container.

2 remove all of the sanding dust. Stain becomes sticky on a wooden surface because it doesn t have a binder such as you find in paint or varnish. We have known for years that steam is a great cleaner and since it is just vaporized water it is safe to use on most types of flooring. Typically if minwax stain is still tacky after 4 6 hours there was too much stain left behind.

The only time i ve seen tacky floors after more than a week is when a very old floor which has been waxed for years is finished with a solvent based coating. Wear shoe covers to prevent staining the wood with grass or other residue from. After 5 15 minutes wipe off the excess evenly and consistently. After wiping off the excess it should be almost dry.

1 remove the entire surface most stains are penetrating sealers that must touch the uncoated wood surface to absorb. It left the stain in the scratches but took all the excess gummy tacky sticky stain off the surface of the floor. The clorox wipes only took so much effort and a 20 square took 2 1 2 hours. After that apply your stain evenly and consistently.

Even then it will eventually dry. Over a large uninterrupted area like a floor blotching and mottling will be much more apparent. When the solvent evaporates all that remains is the pigment and the oil that is. I would dampen a cloth with mineral spirits and wipe off as much of the excess stain as possible.

Don t leave that cloth sitting around after. The remaining stain will come off. One very effective way of removing sticky residue from floors is to use a steam mop. It is still very sticky.

The surface will be sticky if you didn t wipe it down enough 15 minutes after application. The heat from the steam breaks down the soils and residues. The re stain and wipe of a 4 square took about 30 minutes. Most oil based stains recommend these steps for floors.

I now have 3 fans trying to dry it as well as a humidifier. Even though stain manufacturers provide sample chips of stained maple or pine do not be fooled.
