Floor of oral cavity muscles.

The floor of the mouth is a small horseshoe shaped region situated beneath the movable part of the tongue and above the muscular diaphragm formed by the mylohyoid muscles and above this diaphragm is the genohyoid muscle. A mucous membrane known as the oral mucosa is composed of stratified squamous epithelium and forms the inner lining of the mouth. The floor of mouth is an oral cavity subsite and is a common location of oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma. This region is divided into right and left halves by the lingual frenulum and contains the ostia of the submandibular and sublingual salivary glands.

It provides structural support to the floor of the mouth and pulls the larynx forward during swallowing. The floor is formed by the mylohyoid muscles and is occupied mainly by the tongue. The mylohyoid muscles constitute the floor of the oral cavity proper. For purposes of surgical planning the floor of the mouth is defined as the space between the mucosal surface and the mylohyoid muscle sling and comprising both structures 1.

These include the hard palate floor of the mouth buccal mucosa including the upper and lower gingivobuccal sulci retromolar trigone and anterior two thirds or oral portion of the tongue and lips figs. Geniohyoid muscles pull the larynx forward during swallowing. The floor of the mouth is a horizontally aligned u shaped space situated in the part of the oral cavity that lies beneath the tongue. The mylohyoid genioglossus and geniohyoid muscles comprise the muscular floor of the oral cavity.

Several submandibular and sublingual salivary glands secrete viscous and mucoid fluid to lubricate and keep the oral cavity moist. The oral cavity is situated anteriorly on the face under the nasal cavities. The oral cavity encompasses several relatively discrete regions. The floor of the oral cavity consists of several structures.

The oral cavity proper is also surrounded by mucus membrane continuing from the vestibular walls 10. A mucous membrane the oral mucosa lines the sides and under surface of the tongue to the gums lining the inner aspect of the jaw mandible. Inferiorly it has various oral muscles glands tongue attachment to the oral cavity floor 7 through the flexible band of tissues known as lingual frenulum 21.
